Quick answer: A full cord of firewood is 128 cubic feet of wood (a stack 4 ft high x 4 ft wide x 8 ft long). A face cord (also called a rick) is a single row - 4 ft high x 8 ft long x one log deep, usually 16" - so it's about one-third of a full cord. Firewood Flex sells kiln-dried hardwood by the 1/4 cord ($399) and 1/2 cord ($749), neatly palletized and delivered, plus full-pallet MEGA BAG bundles when you want packaged wood you can store and move bag by bag.

Heating season is when the cord questions start: how much is a cord, what's the difference between a cord and a rick, and how much wood you actually need to get through the winter. Here's the straight answer - and the kiln-dried wood to back it up.

Cord vs. Face Cord vs. Rick - What You're Actually Buying

This is the most confused part of buying firewood, and it's where people overpay. The terms are not all legally standardized, so always confirm the log length and cubic feet before you compare quotes.

  • Full cord - 128 cubic feet. A stack 4 ft high x 4 ft wide x 8 ft long. This is the only legally defined unit.
  • Face cord - one row of that stack: 4 ft high x 8 ft long x one log deep (typically 16"). That's roughly 1/3 of a full cord, or about 42-43 cubic feet.
  • Rick - in most markets, a rick is the same thing as a face cord. It is not a standardized unit, so the actual volume depends entirely on the log length the seller cuts. Always ask.

Every piece of Firewood Flex wood is cut to a consistent 16" length, so a 1/4 cord is always a 1/4 cord - no guessing, no short stacks.

How Much Firewood Do You Need This Winter?

Not sure how much to order? Here's a quick guide based on typical heating-season usage:

  • Occasional fires (1-2 fires a week, fireplace): a 1/4 cord or a 15-bag half pallet covers most of the season.
  • Regular use (3-4 fires a week, primary fireplace): a 1/2 cord or a 30-bag full pallet covers a typical winter.
  • Wood stove / supplemental heat (near-daily burning through the coldest months): a 1/2 cord is the right starting point; heavy daily heaters often order a 1/2 cord more mid-season.

Why Kiln-Dried Matters for Heating

Cheap "seasoned" cordwood from the side of the road is usually 25-40% moisture. When you burn wet wood indoors, that water turns to steam instead of heat - you get less warmth, more smoke, and dangerous creosote buildup in your chimney. Firewood Flex is different:

  • Under 18% moisture - dry wood produces heat, not steam. More BTUs per log, a hotter and longer burn.
  • Less creosote - dry wood burns cleaner, which means less dangerous buildup in your flue and chimney.
  • USDA heat-treated at 160°F for 75 minutes - zero bugs, larvae, or eggs come into your home with the wood.
  • Lights on the first match - no struggling with damp wood on a cold night.
  • Consistent 16" splits - fits standard fireplaces and wood stoves, stacks neatly.
