Fire pits, trails and the Susquehanna
York County spends a lot of time outside: backyard fire pits in Springettsbury and York Township, cabins along the Susquehanna in the river towns, camping near the Heritage Rail Trail. Sealed Mega Bags travel well in a car trunk and keep the wood dry at the campsite. Because York County is in Pennsylvania's spotted lanternfly quarantine, heat-treated firewood is the safer choice when you carry wood between properties. Ours is treated to the USDA standard of 160 F at the core for 75 minutes.
Burning wood in older York homes
Many York and Hanover homes date from the early 1900s and have fireplaces that were built for coal. They draw best with small, dry splits. Kiln-dried wood reaches a clean burn quickly instead of smoldering, which means less smoke in the room and less creosote in the flue. A chimney inspection before the season is always a good idea.
