What kiln-dried firewood means
Kiln-dried firewood is hardwood that has been heat-treated in an industrial kiln at 160 degrees F core temperature for at least 75 minutes. The process:
- Kills insects, eggs, larvae, fungal spores, and mold
- Reduces moisture content to under 15% (we test every batch)
- Earns USDA APHIS phytosanitary certification (legal cross-state transport)
"Seasoned" cordwood, by contrast, is air-dried over 6 to 12 months and typically tests 20 to 25 percent moisture. It is not heat-treated, not USDA-certified, and cannot legally cross state quarantine lines.
Why this matters for NJ
New Jersey has active spotted lanternfly quarantine in all NJ counties (statewide quarantine) (Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Somerset, Warren). Untreated firewood cannot legally cross those boundaries. Kiln-dried, USDA-certified firewood is the only legal option for moving wood within NJ if you live in or near a quarantine zone.
