Why kiln-dried wood
Lots of people in Franklin and Hampshire counties season their own wood, and that is a fine tradition. Kiln-dried splits fill the gaps: when your own pile is not dry yet, when you need kindling-ready wood for a cold snap, or when you simply do not have room to season a stack for a year. Our mixed hardwood (oak, hickory, maple, cherry, birch and walnut) is cut to 16 inches, dried to under 15% moisture and heat-treated at 160 F at the core for 75 minutes to the USDA standard. It lights easily, burns with less smoke, and carries no bugs into your yard.
College towns and older homes
Around Northampton and Amherst you find plenty of older homes with original fireplaces, plus rentals and condos with very little storage. A Mega Bag pallet works well there: the bags are sealed and tidy, and you bring in one at a time. Out in the hill towns and along the river, a stacked 1/2 cord is the more common choice.
