Firewood for suburban Northern Virginia
Most homes here are single-family houses and larger townhomes with a gas or wood fireplace and a backyard fire pit. The typical pattern is fires on weekends in fall, then most evenings from Thanksgiving into February. Two pallets cover nearly everyone:
- 1/2 cord pallet, $799 (regularly $940): 64 cu ft, about 2,000 lb. The right size if the fireplace runs most nights.
- 1/4 cord pallet, $499 (regularly $555): 32 cu ft for weekend fires and a backyard fire pit.

Storing wood in an HOA neighborhood
Many Reston, Ashburn and Fairfax developments have rules on where you can keep a woodpile, and some require it out of sight from the street. Sealed bags solve that: they go in the garage like any other supply. If you choose a loose cord, keep it on a rack off the ground and away from the siding, which also keeps termites and carpenter ants away from the house.
Why kiln-dried instead of a local cord
Seasoned wood sold by the truckload in Northern Virginia is often cut the same year and still wet inside. Our hardwood is kiln-dried to under 15% moisture and heat-treated to the USDA standard (160 F core for 75 minutes). It lights with one match, burns with little smoke and brings no insects into the house. Virginia also runs a spotted lanternfly quarantine in a growing list of localities, and heat-treated wood is the safe choice when firewood moves between them.
